Birding Basics
Do you find yourself listening to an odd chirp while walking or gardening? Are you fascinated by the random rustlings in the bushes? Do you notice and enjoy the birds in your world, but wish you knew more about these clever and busy neighbors? This is just the class for you! Participants will learn how birds behave so it will be easier to find, watch, and identify the type you are seeing. Bird identification, adaptations, and habitat will be introduced. Birds of the Oregon Coast will be our focus during this 2-week class. Participants will have access to bird guides and binoculars and will learn how to use them. The final trip of the class will be a field trip to identify birds in the area.

iNaturalist and the Wrack Line:
Crowd-Sourcing Environmental Data
This workshop will introduce you to iNaturalist, a free smartphone and online app that aids users in identifying all manner of plants, animals, and fungi. We will cover how it is currently being used in the Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve in a citizen-science, crowd-sourced, research project. Using the computing power of Ai, learn how you can aid science in studying what is washing ashore at the high tide line of the beach, and how it relates to changes to our ocean and climate. The Wrack Line Project is an initiative of the Coastal Climate Change + Community Art Science and Tradition Project (4CASTproject.org), a partnership between OSU Marine Studies Initiative, USFS, ODFW, The Nature Conservancy, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and the Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative. Want to plant the promise of Spring? Fall bulbs are the answer. From Alliums to Zantedeschia (Calla lily), learn how and when to plant for beautiful Spring flowers. This session will include bulbs, corms, tubers, tuberous roots and rhizomes. The star of the show is the queen of edible bulbs: garlic, which is easy to grow on the coast. Rainwater Collection
Harvesting rainwater conserves resources, reduces water bills and helps landscapes survive in drought or water restriction periods. In this session Ann Geyer, Certified Master Gardener, will introduce the basic concepts of how to collect, store, and distribute rainwater. She will provide examples based on her own experience using only rainwater for her one-acre garden. Intro to the Art of Boat Building
Have you ever dreamed of building your own boat but did not really think you could do it? If so, this class is for you. This class will introduce you to the fine art of boat-building from installing the first plank to launching the boat. Your instructor is a professional boat builder who will walk you through the build of an Oxford Wherry using the efficient and strong “stitch and glue” process. The Oxford Wherry is a versatile, strong, and safe boat that weighs only 53 lbs and can be rowed or paddled like a canoe or kayak. By the end of this class, you should have the information and confidence you need to take the next big step – ordering the kit and attending a local 6-day boat building class led by the instructor. Beginning Argentine Tango
Learn the foundational steps of Argentine Tango, a social and improvisational dance born in Buenos Aires at the end of the 19th century. This class will cover fundamental steps and techniques, rules of the dance floor, and history of tango. By the end of the class, participants will know how to lead or follow basic steps and do simple combinations with traditional and nuevo tango music. Irish Social Dancing for Adults
If you love music and dance, but aren’t a spring chicken, this is for you. Folks in Ireland are cradle-to-grave dancers, and there’s something for everyone! From céilí to set, sean-nós to old-style step, Irish dancing involves a lot more than the high-intensity competitive style everyone is familiar with from “Riverdance.” This class will focus on social dances, and is for adults who love dance and music, but might not have the knees, ankles, and stamina of a 14-year-old. No high kicks, no jumping about, all low-impact, Nora says. A sense of rhythm and some background in dance, gymnastics, ice skating, etc. (anything where you had to string some movements together) will be helpful, but not necessary. Any kind of flat, well-fitting shoe like an Oxford is fine.

Irish Old-Style Steps
This class will focus on solo steps that are the precursor to the modern, competitive style that was popularized by “Riverdance.” This class will be more challenging than the social dancing class, mostly because the steps are intricate, and require the ability to get your feet to do what your brain tells them to do. It’s not particularly physically challenging, as these steps are danced by people well into their 80’s in Ireland, but some low-level hopping about will definitely be involved. We will focus on both sean-nós steps (mostly spontaneous and in response to music) and old style set dances (choreographed). Advanced Traditional Irish Music
Learn to play Traditional Irish Music. The cool kids call it “Trad.” Local musicians Gary Burman and Nora Sherwood will teach traditional Irish dance tunes. They invite you to bring your fiddle, flute, mandolin, penny whistle, banjo, squeeze box or other traditional Irish melody instrument. Join them to learn exciting jigs, reels, hornpipes and polkas. The emphasis will be on learning by ear. Sheet music and recordings will be provided for practicing at home. Playwriting
Have you ever had an experience and thought the story would make a great play or movie? This three-part workshop offers the beginning playwright an opportunity to write a ten-minute play, along with basic information on what goes into writing a full-length theatrical play, screenplay or TV pilot. Using the basic idea that a ten-minute play is fast food for the stage, writers will incorporate simple exercises and standard script format, to develop a ten-minute “edible” play. An introduction to Acting Methods
This two-part workshop offers the beginning actor exercises in a fun and welcoming environment. The first part of the series we discuss and explore the most common acting techniques from classical to improvisation used by theatre and film actors. We introduce different ways the student can engage confidence using body, voice, and mind through self-awareness to enhance their communication skills to apply outside of class and beyond theatre contexts. In the second part of the series, we explore modern method techniques as well as character and scene analysis. Introductory Gyotaku
Gyotaku is the Japanese art of fish printing. At its core, Gyotaku uses the actual fish to achieve a detailed image of the specimen. During this introductory 2-hour session, students will gain an appreciation of the art’s history, print a variety of fish species, and learn techniques to paint fisheyes. This workshop is technique-driven and focuses on refining each print through critiquing and reviewing each print. Participants should come with a spirit of adventure and anticipation.

Poetry even for those who don’t read it
What is poetry? Everyone knows the answer but we can disagree about what it is not. In this class, we’ll examine examples and share discussions about our past experience with poetry. The class will also explore poems and poets who made history, and will explore famous and lesser-known poetry that has survived for eons. We’ll also discuss the poetry explosion of the last 150 years and its consequences, and more. Wallace Kaufman has taught prose and poetry in the community ed program in the past, has taught at several universities, has been published widely, is the former president of the Oxford University Poetry Society, is a translator, and is presently working with Iranian students and translators via videoconference.

Landscape & Seascape Painting in Oil & Acrylic
Participants will be encouraged to paint a number of different landscapes and seascapes creatively, using photographs from various locations around Oregon. Learn to use the fundamentals of design by cropping images, simplifying objects and painting value studies to create a strong image. Katia will guide you through basic palette color choices and show you how to mix colors using simple color theory. She will offer individual instruction to each participant, covering the fundamentals of painting (composition, values, color, edges), and offering advice on handling the medium. This is a 2-part class, starting with a classroom presentation, followed by a guided hike at Spyglass Ridge. Time to lace up your hiking boots! Scuba Diving
Dive into the underwater world with our comprehensive PADI SCUBA class, tailored for adventure enthusiasts and marine life admirers alike. The class kicks off with two immersive pool sessions at the Lincoln City Community Center. These sessions are designed to train you with the essential skills and confidence needed for open-water diving, including equipment usage, safety procedures, and underwater communication. Following these, you’ll have exhilarating open-water certification dives awaiting you in Florence, marking the pinnacle of your training. Priced at $550 per person, this course covers all equipment rentals, such as BCD, regulator, wetsuits and more. Students are required to provide personal gear, including a mask, fins, boots, snorkel, and a surface marker buoy with a whistle. These items can be acquired independently before the class, or from Eugene Skin Diver Supply, who is providing the course instruction; participants choosing this option will need to travel to Eugene to be sized for wetsuit/equipment in the weeks before the course. Upon successful completion, participants will earn their PADI Open Water Certification, opening the door to diving adventures around the globe.

3D Design & Printing
This course is a continuation of our past introductory class, with a focus on more advanced techniques and projects. Students will build upon their existing knowledge of 3D design and printing and delve deeper into the possibilities of this rapidly evolving technology using design software Tinkercad and Fusion 360. The class will cover the process of converting 2D drawings or models into 3D designs, and students are encouraged to bring in their own drawings or models to use as examples. As time allows, the class will work on student-submitted examples, and the class will have a few 3D printers available for demonstration and printing of student projects. The first part of the class will review the basics of 3D design and printing, before moving on to more complex projects and techniques. The class is a two-session course, with each session lasting three hours. This class is suitable for students who have taken the Introduction to 3D Design and Printing course or have prior experience with 3D design and printing and want to expand their knowledge beyond the basic level.

Level I (Beginning) Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It’s administered by laying on hands and can be easily learned by anyone. Reiki has been found to be effective for self-meditation and healing, as well as helping others. Reiki originated in Japan over 100 years ago and has spread throughout the world. Many hospitals (including Providence in Portland) and healing centers have found Reiki to be helpful. It is an easy-to-learn healing modality that is especially effective when focusing on yourself. The first level gives you the ability to do Reiki on yourself, family, friends, and pets.

What is a watershed? Watersheds, also known as drainage basins or catchment areas, are areas of land that drain into a common waterway, such as a river, lake, or ocean. The water that flows from our faucets originates in a watershed. Forests play a vital role in maintaining the health and functionality of watersheds. What is the connection between forests and our water? There is a balance in nature, a connection between watersheds and forests that is a crucial aspect of environmental sustainability and ecosystem health. Join us to learn from experts how intact, mature forests protect our watersheds, impacting both the quality and quantity of water within.

Yakona Nature Preserve & Learning Center
Wild Spruce Medicine Making
Join herbalist and wellness educator Frances O’Halloran for an afternoon of Sitka spruce exploration at Yakona Nature Preserve. In this journey, expect to be immersed in the beauty of ancient evergreen trees, specifically the Picea sitchensis/Sitka spruce. Spruce is one of the predominant evergreens on the coast and offers heart-expanding beauty and deep medicine. Our exploration begins with a short spruce meditation, followed by sampling a “bouquet” of spruce remedies, ethically harvesting the spruce boughs, and crafting a fresh spruce remedy of your choice. Recipes and suggestions will be shared. As a bonus, Rena Olson, Yakona’s Art & Engagement Manager, will lead a captivating discovery walk, offering insights into the area’s dominant coniferous trees and the rich history of Yakona.

Topical botanical preparations provide profound healing properties and are delightful for soothing skin irritations, wounds, dry skin and a myriad of other skin challenges. In this hands-on class we will learn how to create herbal infused body and massage oils, herbal balms, and a luscious face and hand cream. She has a background in botany and chemistry with a natural resources degree from Oregon State University. She has been presenting her creations at the Newport Farmers Market for four years. AARP Smart Driver
This is the AARP flagship course that addresses how changes have impacted the way seniors should be driving. This course qualifies participants for a mandatory discount on their auto insurance premiums. ODOT requires a total of six hours of instructional time to be eligible for a certificate of completion. Presenters ask AARP participants for $20 to cover the cost of materials ($25 for non-members). This fee will be paid at the start of the class to the instructor via cash or check. In Lincoln County, half of our neighbors are hindered by barriers that better access could help alleviate. Together, we’ll explore the importance of supporting individuals in our community; whether it’s ourselves as we age, elderly loved ones, or those who require special accommodations. We’ll highlight how creating more inclusive spaces goes beyond mere parking spots and curb ramps. International Observe the Moon Night occurs annually in September or October, when the moon is around first quarter – a great phase for evening observing. Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
Participants must be at least 15 years of age and able pass a pre-swim test. The test includes a 200-meter swim with two minutes of treading without using arms, and then diving to the bottom of the deep end to retrieve a brick, and returning it to the start without goggles. Successful completion of the course will lead to a two-year Red Cross certification and possible employment opportunities as a lifeguard. Fees are non-refundable after the start of class.
