WHY | The Opportunity
Why Choose Pyschology?
A Psychology degree isn’t just preparation for graduate school in psychology — it’s a foundation for nearly any field where understanding people matters. At OCCC, our Associate of Science in Psychology Transfer degree is designed to move you efficiently toward a four-year university, where you can pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology or pivot into a wide range of other disciplines.
Business, Management & Marketing
Organizations run on people — and psychology gives you the edge to understand why they behave the way they do. Whether you’re drawn to human resources, organizational leadership, consumer behavior, or brand strategy, a background in psychology pairs naturally with business coursework. Many students transfer into business and marketing programs, where skills in research, behavioral analysis, and communication translate directly into competitive advantage.
Law & Criminal Justice
The legal system is built on human judgment, motivation, and behavior. Psychology coursework in cognition, social influence, and development provides a meaningful foundation for students pursuing pre-law pathways, criminal justice, or forensic studies. Understanding how people think and make decisions is as useful in a courtroom as it is in a counselor’s office.
Counseling, Social Work & Human Services
If you’re drawn to direct service — working with individuals, families, or communities — your psychology coursework will ground you in the theories and practices that shape these fields. A transfer degree from OCCC positions you to continue into bachelor’s and master’s programs in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, and related helping professions.
Health & Allied Health
The connection between mental and physical health is well-established, and healthcare increasingly values providers who understand both. Psychology transfers well into pre-health pathways, public health programs, and fields like occupational therapy and health administration — anywhere that patient-centered care is the goal.
Education
Teachers, school counselors, and education administrators all benefit from a deep understanding of how people learn, develop, and respond to their environments. Psychology is one of the most natural bridges into education degrees, particularly for students interested in student support roles or working with diverse populations.
Research & Data Analysis
Psychology majors learn to design studies, analyze data, and interpret results — skills that translate into research roles across academia, healthcare, government, and the private sector. If you find yourself enjoying the analytical side of your coursework, you may discover an appetite for fields like data science, public policy research, or user experience (UX) design.
The Bottom Line
Psychology teaches you to think critically, communicate clearly, and understand what drives human behavior. Those skills are in demand everywhere. Whatever direction you’re headed, starting here at OCCC gives you a strong, flexible foundation — and the support to figure out where you want to go.
