OCCC Launches New Fund to Honor the Legacy of Ron Spisso

‘Lighthouse Fund’ will support local entrepreneurs in memory of longtime Small Business advocate

The Oregon Coast Community College Foundation has established a new fund in memory of Ron Spisso, the longtime Small Business Management Coordinator who served Lincoln County entrepreneurs for nearly 25 years through OCCC’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Spisso passed away in 2023, but his impact on the local business community remains deeply felt.

Ron began working at OCCC in 1991, shortly after relocating to Oregon. He went on to earn his MBA from Oregon State University in 1994 while continuing to guide and support small business owners across the county. Whether coaching a startup through its first business plan or helping a seasoned shop owner navigate expansion, Ron brought patience, insight, and humor to every interaction.

A hallmark of his style was his gift for storytelling. Ron often shared lessons from his earlier experience running the Inlet Deli in Barnegat Light, New Jersey—his famous “deli stories” were more than entertaining anecdotes; they were practical, real-world teaching tools that helped his clients feel seen, supported, and ready to tackle the next challenge.

Now, the Ron Spisso Lighthouse Fund for Small Business Success will continue his legacy by offering small, meaningful financial supports to local entrepreneurs working to grow their businesses. These supports might include funding for certification courses, licensing fees, or other modest but essential expenses—like a $450 Property Manager’s License course for a vacation-rental cleaner ready to expand their enterprise.

“This fund reflects what Ron did best—helping people take the next step,” said Dave Price, OCCC Vice President of Engagement. “He met clients with warmth and respect, and gave them both the tools and the confidence to move forward. We hope those who knew Ron, worked with him, or simply believe in the power of small businesses will consider contributing. As a former client of Ron’s, and someone who heard my share of ‘deli stories’ and still remembers them today, I know I’ll be contributing, too.”
