OCCC Career Cruises June 16-18 in Newport
Oregon Coast Community College is inviting high school students from across Lincoln County to launch their summer with purpose and hands-on discovery through “Career Cruises,” a free, three-day summer program designed to introduce students to engaging career pathways in key coastal and statewide industries.
From Monday, June 16 through Wednesday, June 18, students entering grades 10 through 12 (Classes of 2026, 2027, and 2028) will take part in one of four immersive tracks offered at OCCC’s Central Campus in Newport. Each cruise features interactive experiences, local field trips, and real-world exposure to high-demand career sectors.
Aquaculture & Marine Careers Cruise
Students in this cruise will explore pathways and job skills related to aquaculture, aquarium science, and aquatic animal research. Based in OCCC’s Aquarium Science building, the program also includes site visits to local institutions like the Oregon Coast Aquarium and Hatfield Marine Science Center. Students will gain hands-on experience in the biology, chemistry, and engineering principles involved in the care of aquatic species. Working in teams, participants will also design and build a functioning small animal habitat.
Natural Resources Career Cruise
This cruise offers students a window into the diverse field of natural resources. The program begins at the OCCC campus and includes field experiences such as guided tours at Yakona Nature Preserve, the fishing docks of Newport’s bayfront, and the new Oo-Nee-Sea Ranch. Students will engage with professionals working in fisheries, ecology, biology, outdoor education, and parks and recreation. The cruise highlights how careers in natural resources contribute to sustainable resource management and environmental stewardship.
Trades & Apprenticeship Career Cruise
The Trades/Apprenticeship Cruise introduces students to the world of skilled trades and apprenticeships. Participants will visit OCCC’s welding lab and a local manufacturing facility, and take part in hands-on activities involving tool safety, basic electrical and plumbing concepts, and virtual reality-based career exploration. Guest speakers from a range of trades will share insights about how to get started and succeed in these essential, well-paying careers.
Healthcare Career Cruise
Students in the Healthcare Cruise will experience the broad range of roles in today’s healthcare system. Highlights include a field trip to Samaritan Hospital and a local rehabilitation center, hands-on practice in OCCC’s Nursing Skills Lab, and VR-based career exploration. Presentations will feature professionals working in public health, diagnostic imaging, emergency medical services, and long-term care. The cruise is designed to expose students to the many ways to serve patients and communities through healthcare.
Career Cruises will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, June 16–18, at Oregon Coast Community College’s Central Campus at 400 SE College Way in Newport. The program is free of charge.
“This is a hands-on, high-impact opportunity for students to begin thinking about their future,” said Becky York, OCCC’s Career Connected Learning Coordinator. “We’re proud to partner with local organizations and professionals to provide this unique summer experience.”
