This class is designed to get a sense of Japanese culture and perspectives in daily life. Examples are shown by slides, demonstration and hands-on activities. The instructor will talk about art elements in Japanese cultural context and then demonstrates cooking that links to the theme each session.

The tentative topics:

Week 1 • Travel, recreations –
Tamagoyaki, Ohitashi

Week 2 • Classics, education – Different forms of soy

Week 3 • Subculture – Okonomiyaki

Week 4 • Partitions – Domburi (Rice bowl dish)

Week 5 • Hare and Ke (ordinary life and special occasions) – Misoshiru (Miso soup) with many things

Week 6 • Display and created traditions – Oshizushi, Sushi cake
