OCCC Board of Education announces special meeting for Sept. 30

Agenda features consideration of new College president

The Oregon Coast Community College Board of Education is anticipated to announce the next College President at a special meeting Monday, Sept. 30.

The OCCC Board will hold a special meeting on Monday, September 30, at 7 p.m. During this meeting, the Board will vote on a contract with the College’s next President, following a rigorous, nearly year-long search process.

The search for the next OCCC President focused on applicants with Oregon higher education experience and received applications from across the US. The process included community partner and staff forums,  interviews with the Board of Education and College leadership, and in-depth reviews of references and prior career experiences. This thorough approach reflects the Board’s commitment to selecting a candidate who will continue to guide the institution in its mission to serve the community and its students effectively, and to realize the vision embedded in the 2024 Bond measure.

The appointment of a new President is a notable moment in OCCC’s history. While many community colleges see new presidents every three to five years, Oregon Coast Community College stands out with a track record of long-serving, visionary, accomplished leaders. Dr. Patrick O’Connor, who served as President for 22 years, was instrumental in launching the College’s renowned Nursing and Aquarium Science Programs and oversaw the construction of its campuses in Newport, Lincoln City, and Waldport. Dr. Birgitte Ryslinge, now in her eleventh year as President, led the College to independent accreditation in 2019, navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, oversaw the launch of new programs including teaching, welding and pre-apprenticeship, and spearheaded a successful bond measure in May 2024 to enhance student learning resources and construct a new trades education facility in Lincoln County.

“The Board is excited to introduce a new leader who will build on the College’s legacy and continue to advance opportunities for students in Lincoln County and beyond,” said OCCC Board Chair Rich Emery.“Our next president will take the helm January 1, 2025, ushering in an exciting new chapter for OCCC, and we are confident they will be a visionary leader who shares the College’s commitment to excellence, innovation, equity and community.”
