Intro to the Art of Boat Building

Have you ever dreamed of building your own boat but did not really think you could do it? If so, this class is for you. This class will introduce you to the fine art of boat-building from installing the first plank to launching the boat.   Your instructor is a professional boat builder who will walk you through the build of an Oxford Wherry using the efficient and strong “stitch and glue” process.  The Oxford Wherry is a versatile, strong, and safe boat that weighs only 53 lbs and can be rowed or paddled like a canoe or kayak. By the end of this class, you should have the information and confidence you need to take the next big step – ordering the kit and attending a local 6-day boat building class led by the instructor. Or for the adventurous, you can take on the build yourself. Either way, this class will help you get a big push in starting the project with the fundamentals of boat building under your belt.

Irish Social Dancing for Adults

If you love music and dance, but aren’t a spring chicken, this is for you. Folks in Ireland are cradle-to-grave dancers, and there’s something for everyone! From céilí to set, sean-nós to old-style step, Irish dancing involves a lot more than the high-intensity competitive style everyone is familiar with from “Riverdance.” This class will focus on social dances, and is for adults who love dance and music, but might not have the knees, ankles, and stamina of a 14-year-old. No high kicks, no jumping about, all low-impact, Nora says. A sense of rhythm and some background in dance, gymnastics, ice skating, etc. (anything where you had to string some movements together) will be helpful, but not necessary.  Any kind of flat, well-fitting shoe like an Oxford is fine.

Irish Old-Style Steps

This class will focus on solo steps that are the precursor to the modern, competitive style that was popularized by “Riverdance.” This class will be more challenging than the social dancing class, mostly because the steps are intricate, and require the ability to get your feet to do what your brain tells them to do. It’s not particularly physically challenging, as these steps are danced by people well into their 80’s in Ireland, but some low-level hopping about will definitely be involved. We will focus on both sean-nós steps (mostly spontaneous and in response to music) and old style set dances (choreographed). A sense of rhythm and at least some background in dance will be very helpful. Any kind of flat, well-fitting shoe like an Oxford is fine.

This class will introduce you to basic playing techniques and some fun tunes to start you out.  And, the cost includes your very own pennywhistle.

Water Is In Our Hands

Presented by Protect Oregon Watersheds, Stop The Spray, and Lincoln County Community Rights

What is a watershed?  Watersheds, also known as drainage basins or catchment areas, are areas of land that drain into a common waterway, such as a river, lake, or ocean.  The water that flows from our faucets originates in a watershed.  Forests play a vital role in maintaining the health and functionality of watersheds. What is the connection between forests and our water?  There is a balance in nature, a connection between watersheds and forests that is a crucial aspect of environmental sustainability and ecosystem health.  Join us to learn from experts how intact, mature forests protect our watersheds, impacting both the quality and quantity of water within.

  • Thursday, Sept. 19: Dr. Dominick DellaSala, of Wild Heritage will speak on the benefits of mature and old-growth forests of the PNW.
  • Thursday, Sept. 26: Looking to the Future, we discover the critical impacts of a warming planet on our water.
  • Thursday, Oct. 3:  A Community Seeking Justice: Personal testimony and discussion from a water rights advocate.
  • Thursday, Oct. 10:  Walking the Watershed, we’ll tour a local water source and its state-of-the-art treatment plant.  (NOTE:  Special morning time.)

EQ: Emotional Intelligence

“As we journey through life, we readily discover that every day brings with it the ups and downs of challenges, unknowns, asking ‘why did this or that happen,’ and ‘if I only knew better, I might have changed my response or interacted a bit differently in a situation.’  We can all relate – right?” So writes Stewart Brannen, who has been teaching emotional intelligence courses at universities and colleges throughout the United States and Canada for more than 15 years, including here at OCCC.  “As a life coach,” Stewart continued, “my students have included senior-level executives, housewives, public officials, married and dating couples, educational specialists – you name it, and people just genuinely wanting to learn more about themselves and the human world that we live and interact in.  Should you join my EQ class, I will guide you and the class participants through the deeper dive of enriching self-awareness and which leads to the outward path of relationship management.  You will discover how, and where, energy flows in and out of our heads and hearts, and learn how to positively elevate your own personal vibration through emotional intelligence applications in our daily lives.  Course participants always walk away with a heartfelt smile, and with a little encouragement, I know you will too – please join me.”

Accessibility 101

Join Taylor Yount, local accessibility consultant, as she delves into the basics of accessibility. In Lincoln County, half of our neighbors are hindered by barriers that better access could help alleviate. Together, we’ll explore the importance of supporting individuals in our community; whether it’s ourselves as we age, elderly loved ones, or those who require special accommodations. We’ll highlight how creating more inclusive spaces goes beyond mere parking spots and curb ramps. Simple adjustments to how individuals access things, such as navigating physical spaces and online, can have a positive impact on the well-being of those in need. Whether you are a small business owner, a volunteer or a community member, this course will empower you with the necessary tools and knowledge to address accessibility.

Get Moonstruck: On International Observe the Moon Night

International Observe the Moon Night is a time to come together with fellow moon enthusiasts and curious people worldwide. Everyone on earth is invited to learn about lunar science and exploration, take part in celestial observations, and honor cultural and personal connections to the moon. We encourage everyone to interpret “observe” broadly!  International Observe the Moon Night occurs annually in September or October, when the moon is around first quarter – a great phase for evening observing.  A first-quarter moon offers excellent viewing opportunities along the terminator (the line between night and day), where shadows enhance the moon’s cratered landscape.
