Intro to Herbalism: PNW Medicinal Herbs

Are you interested in studying plants, and have a desire to learn more about herbalism and plant identification? Curious what plants around you have medicinal properties and how to ethically wild-harvest them? If so, this foray into the wild Pacific Northwest is for you. Learn about medicinal plants that you can find right here in your own backyard with local herbalist Laura Sanders. Laura has a background in botany and chemistry, and holds a Natural Resources degree from Oregon State University. She has been selling her apothecary’s creations at the Newport Farmers Market for four years. Ethical wild harvesting, or wildcrafting, is a core foundation of this class and will be taught in conjunction with plant identification and herbalism basics.

Water Is In Our Hands

Drinking water comes from our faucets – but how does it get there? All of us learn about the water cycle in school, but does it mean we have an endless supply of water? When we look at water, it looks clean, but is it? And how do we really know how clean “clean” water actually is? Come join us for a four-week class and find answers to these water-related questions.  Together we will define words like “watershed,” “aquifer,” “surface water,” and “groundwater.”  We’ll explore how our daily choices impact the water around us.  We’ll focus on our right to clean drinking water and explore the obligations of that right; it is “in our hands.” As a culminating activity, the class will decide on a field trip to an old growth forest or other watershed-related destination.  Sponsored by Lincoln County Community Rights & Protect Oregon Watersheds.  ProtectOregonWatersheds.org

  • Wed., Feb. 28:  Beyond the faucet: Where does your water come from?

Introduction to Knitting with Two Colors: Intarsia and Stranded Knitting

This is a class for intermediate knitters who know how to cast on, bind off, and work knit and purl stitches, in rows and in rounds, on double-pointed needles and on circular needles. You will learn how to use multiple colors in two different techniques: intarsia, to knit blocks of color using bobbins in back-and-forth rows, and stranded knitting (also known as Fair Isle knitting), carrying multiple colors continuously while knitting in rounds. The intarsia project will be a pair of baby argyle socks (or another project that uses intarsia techniques) and a hat knit in the round with a 2-color pattern. There is no materials fee for this class. Students will provide their own yarn and knitting needles. Additional details about the knitting patterns and supplies will be available before the class begins.

Piece Together Your Writing Puzzle

You want to workshop your work — essays, novels, articles, even poetry? This class is driven by memoir writing as the focus, but we can develop a specialized look at how to get your ideas and dream projects down on paper, or on the screen. Sometimes it takes a community to grow your writing and to encourage you “putting it all down.” We’ll look at memoir writing, but also develop better ways of expressing ourselves as interesting, engaged writers.  Approaching April, we can also look at the power of the word in the form of poetry. However, we’ll focus on your memoirs:  . . .  “Inside each of us is a natural-born storyteller, waiting to be released.” . . . . “Memories too often die with their owner, and time too often surprises us by running out.”

Before End of Life: the Roadmap

It’s always too soon until it’s too late. It’s time to start taking care of business. Let’s ask some key questions:  Who has the passwords? Who knows the secrets?  Where is everything? What is the executor’s job? And, how can we help them ahead of time? No matter where you are in the journey of life, there will be an end point.  Taking the time to help guide both you and your loved ones will make the process easier. This program helps guide you to organize life and care information. This course is for families, friends, individuals, and caregivers. This is a two-session course. The facilitator is Barbara Bush, a retired Firefighter/EMT/RN with extensive experience in Emergency, Disaster, and Hospice settings.
